王笛，美国得克萨斯A&M大学历史系副教授，美国霍普金斯大学历史学博士，华中师范大学近代史研究中心客座教授，中国社科院近代史研究所特邀研究员，2003和2004年任旅美中国历史学会会长。曾在美国密西根大学中国研究中心、日本东京大学东洋文化研究所等任客员研究员。他的《跨出封闭的世界：长江上游区域社会研究，1644-1911》是中国区域史研究的代表作。2003年在斯坦福大学出版社出版《街头文化：成都公共空间、下层民众与地方政治，1870－1930》。其英文新著《茶馆：成都的小商业、日常文化与公共政治，1900－1950》将由斯坦福大学出版社出版。《街头文化》一书，因“在学术上重要性、原创性、深入的研究、方法的精湛、论证的力度，以及对城市史研究领域的重大贡献”，2005年荣获两年一度颁发的“美国城市史学会最佳著作奖”。
